Pawtucket, R.I. — Forget everything you thought you knew about a “defensive struggle.” What Rhode Island unleashed on Elon at Centreville Bank Stadium Saturday wasn’t a struggle at all — it was a full-blown takeover. The Rams turned the Phoenix’s offense into a turnover machine, ripped away five takeaways, housed a pick-six, and blew a tie game wide open in the second half to win going away, 31-10. Rhody moves to 2-1 overall and a perfect 1-0 in CAA play. And if you’re keeping track at home: that’s 16 consecutive victories at home. Sixteen. The preseason talk about the two time defending CAA champions was all about its explosive offense but Saturday the defense made sure everybody in the CAA knows it hits hard and has game wreckers all over the field.
A New Home, A Statement Win
Saturday wasn’t just another Saturday — it was Rhody’s first home game in its new temporary digs at Centreville Bank Stadium while Meade Stadium undergoes construction, and the Rams made sure the debut was one to remember. A raucous crowd, a dominant defensive showcase, and a 21-point win in the building’s first football test — that’s about as good as a housewarming gets.
It’s also worth noting the moment this win arrives in: it’s the first home win under new Athletic Director Pat Lyons, whose leadership is steering this athletic department into a new era.
A Slow Burn, Then an Explosion
Elon came in confidant — a Phoenix defense that had allowed a stingy 7 points across its first 10 quarters of football. So when the game sat knotted at 3-3 through three quarters, you could feel the tension building in Pawtucket. Then the fourth quarter arrived, and the Rams put their boot on the throat. URI put together an 18-play, 98-yard drive that came down to 4th-and-goal — head coach Flem went for the kill instead of the field goal, and Terrence Campbell punched it in from a yard out. All 31 Rhody points came in the second half.
Fifth-year senior Sam Ofurie, who played through a heavy taping on his hand, summed it up afterward: “This Rams team is tough as nails. We believe in each other. I was very confident the defense would show up and show out. That’s part of our championship DNA.”
The Defense Was the Story
Rhode Island hauled in four interceptions — the most by the program since 2013 — plus a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal, for five forced turnovers leading to 14 points. Linebackers Rohan Davy and Moses Meus each had 7 tackles, with Meus adding 1.5 TFLs, a half-sack, and a pick. The dagger belonged to Mitchell Garner, whose 30-yard pick-six pushed the lead to 24-3. Tyson Grimm and Andre DePina-Gray each grabbed interceptions too — four different Rams defenders picked off a pass. Captain Case Mankins anchored the front with a sack, and Trey Lubin and Chaas McCoy each added one of their own.
Offense Did Just Enough
Tyler Budge went 15-for-28 throwing for 178 yards and make some key plays with his feet and his arm adding two touchdowns. All-American Marquis Buchanan caught a touchdown for the fifth straight game, and Aboraa Kwarteng added 57 yards and a score. Josh Hamel booted a career-long 51-yard field goal.
Special Teams Flipped the Field
Rhody blocked an Elon field goal, got that 51-yarder from Hamel, and pinned a punt inside the 5-yard line.
